Seasonal Routines
Guidelines to help align your lifestyle with the changing seasons to maintain balance and well-being.
Ayurvedic seasonal routines are also known as Ritucharya. Ayurveda recognises that each season has unique qualities that influence the human body and mind, and adapting to these changes can prevent imbalances and seasonal ailments. Ritucharya emphasizes the importance of adjusting one’s diet, daily habits, and activities to harmonize with the dominant doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—associated with each season.
During the winter and late autumn when the weather is cold and dry, Vata dosha tends to dominate. Ayurvedic routines for this season focus on nurturing warmth and moisture in the body. Individuals are encouraged to consume warm, nourishing foods like soups, stews, and ghee, while avoiding cold and raw foods. Massages with warming oils, adequate rest, and staying physically active in moderation are also recommended to balance Vata and prevent issues like dryness, anxiety, and joint discomfort.
#1 Winter Routine…….. Abhyanga!
A wonderful traditional Ayurvedic self-massage technique using warm oil. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation, nourishes the skin, and balances energy.

As spring arrives, Kapha dosha becomes predominant, characterized by dampness, heaviness, and lethargy. To counteract this, Ayurveda suggests lighter, spicier, and more astringent foods that help cleanse and rejuvenate the body, such as leafy greens, ginger, and turmeric. Regular exercise, dry brushing, and avoiding overly sweet or heavy foods are also emphasized to prevent Kapha-related imbalances like sinus congestion and sluggishness.
#1 Spring Routine…….. Dry Brushing!
Vigorously massaging your skin can help generate heat, enhance lymphatic circulation, promote fluid balance, and support healthy, supple skin.

In summer, Pitta dosha takes center stage, driven by heat and intensity. To balance Pitta, cooling practices are recommended, including the consumption of hydrating and cooling foods like cucumbers, melons, and coconut water. Avoiding overly spicy or oily foods is key, as is staying hydrated and minimizing exposure to excessive heat. Gentle exercises, calming activities, and cooling oils like sandalwood are also encouraged. By following these seasonal routines, Ayurveda helps people maintain harmony with nature and optimize their health throughout the year.
